Argan: The Tree of Life

Imagine a tree that is able to thrive in desert conditions. Its leaves and fruit providing food for livestock, its wood for fuel, and oil extracted from the kernel of the fruit for culinary, cosmetic and medicinal purposes. Truly a tree of life!

The argan tree (argania spinosa) is found exclusively in Morocco, particularly the south-western region. It grows wild in semi-desert soil and is extremely well adapted to drought and other environmentally harsh conditions. The fruit has a green, fleshy exterior that ripens to a bright yellow. It contains a nut with an extremely hard shell. Within the nut, there are up to three almond-shaped kernels from which precious argan oil is extracted.

Argan oil is highly valued for its cosmetic and health benefits. Scientists have now discovered that this exquisite oil is exceptionally rich in Vitamin E, carotenes, squalene, essential fatty acids and unsaturated fatty acids.

Though local Amazigh peoples of Morocco have long known of its value, argan oil is beginning to gain popularity as an ingredient in skin and hair care products.

We are excited to bring this precious product from the edge of the Sahara desert to the shores of Australia.
